The United States Food and Drugs Authority allowed two medical procedures that are favored by the majority of doctors and their patients. The most ideal procedure is the Lap band (Laparoscopic Gastric Band) and the other is Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y).

The Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y) is the second most preferred bariatric surgery which involves cutting and stapling of the stomach and lower intestines. This is far more different from lap band surgery. In this procedure, small pouch is created from a part of the stomach and the larger portion of the stomach is stapled. Normally, the section of the stomach attached to the large intestines is redirected to the lower intestines. In this case the amount of food that can be digested will be minimal at will be at once. The effects of this procedure will be loss of appetite and eventually limits the persons food consumption. The person will feel less hungry since the cutting and stapling are already applied

The lap bands used in the surgery comes in two sizes. Standard band is commonly used by doctors for normal cases of obesity. However, large bands are used for extraordinary obesity to augment weight loss results.

Side affects are insignificantly small, with a lower mortality rate than those associated with gastric bypass surgery. Hair loss, which is a result of rapid weight loss, is reduced dramatically.

If the individual is pregnant, the Lap Band procedure allows the expecting mom the intake of nutrition needed for her and her unborn child. Because this procedure is completely reversible, if a patient decides to have it removed, the stomach returns to its original capacity and function.

Compared to gastric bypass surgery lap band procedure have small chance of side effects and mortality cases. Hair loss is a side effect of excessive weight loss but with this treatment it is reduced slowly.

Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y) is another bariatric surgery which engages cutting and stapling of the stomach and lower intestines. It is different from lap band surgery. In this method, small pouch is shaped from a part of the stomach and the bigger portion of the stomach is pinned. Usually, the section of the stomach attached to the large intestines is redirected to the lower intestines. As a result, the patient will experience appetite loss and eventually controlled food consumption.

It is not uncommon for individuals to loose as much as 100 pounds in the first three months. Eventually the stomach heals and a normal hunger starts to return. Once this happens, more calories are ingested. However, the amount of food that a person can eat is still limited. Weight loss does decrease slightly but the patient still continues to lose weight up to 8 more months. At that time, the body reaches its plateau for about 1 to 2 weeks and then weight loss resumes but at a much slower rate. Patients who have undergone the Roux-en-Y procedure have lost up to 250 pounds within the first year. However, each individual is different and weight loss will vary.
