Reflux Diet
Various Reflux Diets
Reflux diets are suggested for people that have acid reflux disease due to high acid levels in the stomach. Diets targeted to the reflux sufferer will decrease acid levels which in turn will reduce heartburn. The main cause of reflux disease is diet, although other things may contribute. Most people have suffered heartburn at one time or another in their lifetime, while others may constantly suffer from it. Some of the symptoms include a burning sensation, also known as heartburn along with nausea and vomiting.
Reflux Diet Suggestions
People come up with their own variations of diets to follow to help relieve the symptoms of reflux disease. Most diets recommend which foods to avoid and which foods are okay to consume. Avoiding the high risk foods is recommended. Any foods that are likely to increase acid levels in the stomach are to be avoided, such as citrus fruits and other high acid foods. Most people with reflux disease will know what they can and cannot eat from past eating experiences.
Some versions of diets simply highlight the foods that may be eaten without fear of heartburn or other symptoms. Green vegetables and fruits, milk with a low fat content, cereals and other whole grain foods are some examples of foods safe to consume. Many of these diets do not include a list of foods to avoid, which can be a drawback. Knowing which foods to avoid can play a huge role in dietary habits.
Sometimes people debate over what should and should not be consumed such as coffee or smoking cigarettes. Beverages containing caffeine have been proven to increase chances of aggravating acid reflux disease symptoms. Avoiding caffeine is recommended for most people. Time and experience will allow each individual to determine what they can and cannot eat, after which they can develop their own unique diet plan.
Consulting with your regular doctor will also help in figuring out a suitable diet. Obviously avoiding foods that are known to aggravate reflux symptoms should be avoided so as not to suffer the consequences. Some people love a particular food so much that they will suffer in order to enjoy the taste. Of couse this is up to each individual. Making a diet plan a part of daily lifestyle will eventually become habit and easy to follow. Some foods avoided by those suffering from acid reflux would be considered unhealthy by many, so in essence a healthier diet is the result. Even people that do not suffer reflux symptoms could benefit from avoiding the foods that cause others to have heartburn.
